How to successfully Potty Train your poodle!

Commitment, Patience, and a Positive Attitude!

Do not expect your puppy to be house trained too early! Getting discouraged too soon in the number one thing I see happen, please remember that a puppy cannot yet control their small bladders- they are babies!

How to make it easier?

  • Establish a spot that will be your puppies designated “potty area”. Be consistent on bringing your puppy to this spot. Choose times when your puppy with need to eliminate- after a nap, after eating, after drinking, or after and extend play time.  When your puppy goes to the bathroom – reward, reward, reward!

  • Watch for the signs! Puppies will often start sniffing, circling, or digging when looking for a spot to potty. If you notice any of these sign bring your puppy outside or to their potty area.

  • DO NOT OVER CORRECT ! If you do not catch your puppy in the act, DO NOT correct them, or rub their nose in there accident! This will NOT help potty train your puppy! If you do catch your puppy while having an accident take them directly to their “potty spot” If you do not catch them in the act and only find the mess, clean it up.

  • Be consistent ! If you take the time to establish house training habits from the beginning, it will be easier for you and your puppy. Teaching a new behavior is much easier than correcting an undesirable behavior.

  • The last and most important is your ATTITUDE! Puppies are going to respond to your attitude. Don’t make potty training a negative experience. Don’t scold your puppy too harshly or they will only become afraid of you- or submissively urinate. When your puppy does eliminate in the correct area, praise him!

Using a crate to aid in house training.

A crate can be a great tool to help with potty training, but only if they are used    properly. You can not always be watching your puppy, so a crate provides a safe place for them to be.

  • Don't use a crate for punishment, you want your puppy to feel safe in a crate

  • Introduce using a crate slowly- don't leave them alone for extended periods of time.

  • Provide toys to keep them busy !

  • Use the proper size- Your puppy should be able to stand up and turn around or lay down comfortably. However, you don't want the crate too large or they will use one side as their sleeping area, and the other as their potty area.
